Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Tips and Tricks

A list of useful hints covering the basics of the game as well as sailing which will make the playing process easier

The tutorial system in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire deserves to be better, so many things are left unknown or misunderstood. I’ll give you several dozens of simple, complex, useful and, perhaps, obvious tips, that will ease the walkthrough the main storyline and side quests.

General tips

  • Don’t choose multi-class characters as you won’t unlock the most powerful skills of the 8th and 9th levels during the 20 available levels of the game. On the other hand, you’ll be able to combine skills of the two chosen classes.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Tips and Tricks-1
  • Press TAB during the game to highlight interesting objects. Characters that play a certain role in the storyline or in side quests will be necessarily highlighted. If the character is just circled by a blue line, he is useless.
  • To change group members, press P.
  • You can put five people in the squad including the main hero (the Keeper). At the same time, you may play with one hero or in the group of two, three or four heroes.
  • There are 7 companions in the main storyline and four helpers. Helpers are worse than companions because there’s no personal quest and no communication inside the group.
  • Don’t ignore the opportunity to choose the formation of the squad. Close range fighters should be put in the frontline, distant range fighters belong to the second row and support is better placed in the last row.
  • Besides ordinary damage that decreases health, your companions may be injured. The fourth injury leads to death so be careful. To heal injuries, you need rest and any food. You can’t rest in dangerous caves etc but you can rest in the tavern.
  • To simplify orientation in the inventory, sort by weapon, armor, etc.
  • Ordinary weapons and armor don’t have any color, upgraded weapons and armor are highlighted by blue and the best weapons and armor are highlighted by yellow.
  • Only a keeper can have a pet as he’s the only one who has the necessary slot unlocked.

Tips on ships

  • Guns won’t fire without gunners. Pay attention to their position. If guns are on the left and right sides of the ship, you won’t be able to fire until you turn sideways.

  • Tipping over the sales allows to turn on 180 degrees Just like a turn to the left or the right, it takes from one to three moves depending on the size of the ship.
  • If the hull strength drops to zero you lose.
  • If the sails are destroyed, you won’t be able to maneuver (or you’ll have to spend plenty of moves).
  • When choosing boarding, keep in mind that the opponent will fire at you, and you will lose hull strength, sails strength and several crew members. Ideally, you should board during a turn-based sea battle. Use the function «Full ahead» to get close to the enemy and to receive an opportunity to board or ram.
  • To increase the fighting spirit of the crew, give them food and drinks with corresponding bonuses, win in sea battles and share rewards for these victories. The later is the most efficient method.
  • You can buy new ships in Nekitaka from a ship master who is on the queen’s quay.
  • The best ship by firepower is the junk although it loses on hull strength to the galleon.
  • Keep in mind that the «Wanderer» has guns on the rostrum and stern so you won’t have to turn to fire.
  • Repair supplies, medicines and cannonballs can be bought in any port. Go to the chosen port and find “Supplies” at the location screen. The supply quantity is unlimited.
  • The needed location is typically shown in the description of the quests. There, you can also find the direction where you should find the necessary island, ship etc. Read carefully! If you can’t complete a certain quest, use our article «Completion of side quests in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadrire».
  • You can moor to any island. In order to do this, find the «anchor» icon or find a port (a town that is located on the outskirts of the island.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Tips and Tricks-3
  • If you feel that the opponent has a better crew than you have (he has less injured crew members), don’t board unless the level of your crew is not higher than the level of the opponent’s ship captain.
  • The opposite is true: if you feel that you can defeat your opponent during boarding, but you lose on firepower and hull strength, board immediately.
  • On the map, cities are marked by silver mugs, various dungeons and temples are marked by yellow mugs, storms are marked by a «lightning», the capital, Nekitaka, is marked by a «sun». You’ll also find smaller icons that point to ships.
  • The fighting spirit drops from shortage of food and drinks, injured crew members labor, attempt to escape from an enemy vessel or a surrender in battle.
  • To change the crew of a ship, go to Nekitaka.
  • In the upper left side of the screen you’ll find a list of «Known places». Use it as it will help you find the necessary points on the map and automatically send a ship there.
