Monster Hunter: World
An open-world action role-playing game that is part of the Monster Hunter series. Now, players explore vast territories of a newly discovered continent and hunt down large and dangerous beasts.
The plot takes you through high fantasy setting, where the human race and other sentient beings have discovered a New World on a separate continent, away from the populated Old World. Surrounded by untamed wilderness and inhabited by powerful monsters, researchers from the Old World have been keeping an eye on what the New World has to offer in terms of terrain, vegetation and wildlife. Led by the Research Commission, several ocean-bound fleets have made their way to the New World to establish working bases.
Played from a third person’s perspective, Monster Hunter: World lets you take control of the Hunter, who is part of the fifth fleet that has been ordered to move towards the New World to provide support. Assisted by the Handler, the Hunter encounters his first gigantic monster on the way, Zorah Magdaros, who wreaks havoc on other ships and creates ruckus in the New World. After making it safely to Astera, the Research Commission base in the New World, the Hunter is informed that Zorah Magdaros has made an appearance in the New World in lieu of Elder Crossing, an event that takes place only once in ten years. The Hunter is then ordered to help set up various camps in the New World while fighting away any hostile monsters he comes across.
Like most modern-crafting games, the Hunter begins his quest with nothing but a chainmail and a flimsy weapon, scouting the New World for monsters that can be harvested for stronger gear that can be used to take down bigger monsters. While the basic weapons can be obtained with the in-game money, the advanced equipment is usually built from the material loot the Hunter gets after slaying or trapping monsters and completing quests. This creates a core loop that can be exploited in a variety of ways throughout the gameplay.
The Hunter does not possess any intrinsic attributes and his abilities depend entirely on the weapon he chooses to fight with. With a total of 14 weapon types, the Hunter can go through a long sword and shield, hammer, an ammo-switch bowgun, hunting horn and many more. The Hunter can also retire to base camps to restore health, acquire limited provisions and have a hearty meal that provides a limited time-buff. The New World is made up of six large regions that are marked with numbered time zones. Unlike the previous editions of Monster Hunter, the Hunter can seamlessly transition from one time zone to the other without being interrupted by a loading screen.
For tracking down the monster, the Hunter is aided with Scout flies that hover on the path that leads to the monster. The Hunter can collect resources like flora, bones, insects, ores while following the tracks, investigate the environment to power up the Scout’s abilities that will finally lead him to the monster. During a combat, the Hunter can either kill or trap the monster when it's sufficiently weakened, using the tools he’s carrying and taking advantage of the environment he’s in. For example, he can drown a monster by breaking a natural dam or lead the monster to the den of another monster ensuing a fight between the two. The game is equipped with a day-night cycle and a dynamic weather system which can influence the behavior of a monster during combat.
Capcom first confirmed the console release dates at Tokyo Game Show 2017, and over five million copies of the game were shipped three days after release. Monster Hunter: World was received well by the critics for retaining the core formula of Monster Hunter series and taking ample advantage of the power of consoles to make the game feel more alive. While the difficulty curve of the game can be daunting for first-time players, the learning mechanics are certainly a big help.
