Man of Medan story begins in 1947 in a Manchuria port where coffins covered with US flags are loaded on board an American ship. Meanwhile, our hero Joe and his friend Charlie spend their last minutes on the land at the local market.
Having drunk their fair share, friends decide to split up for a while – Charlie tries to seduce a trading woman in the nearby, while Joe wants to try his luck at the fortuneteller. You can ask the elder either about the hero’s son or about potential earnings, but in both cases, you’ll get an ominous prediction.
Having returned to his comrade, Joe will express his desire to show his skills in a fight against a training dummy. In this introductory QTE segment, you’ll have to timely hit the boxing pads (aim the sight and press the hit button) and dodge ‘’opponent’’ attacks in time.
Regardless of the outcome of the fight, drunk characters will decide to return to their service. While the heroes walk towards the military vessel, swaying from side to side, mysterious-looking wooden containers marked ‘’Danger’’ are loaded on board the ship.
Before friends reach the upper deck, they will engage in a pointless drunk brawl. The conflict will be quickly resolved by a sergeant: Joe will get hit in the face and head to the sickbay, while Charlie will be put in the guardroom.
Before the ship leaves, it will be struck by the lighting, causing short circuit on the vessel. One of the above-mentioned crates will be damaged as a result of this incident – a green smoke of unknown origin will get through the hole formed in the container.
A few hours later, Joe wakes up in the infirmary. The door to the outside is locked – the key is ‘’in the arms’’ of the corpse in the cabinet at the far wall of the room. If you wish, look at the son’s photo on the stand near the exit from the room and get out into the corridor.
Move along the only available route to Charlie’s cell. According to him, he heard airplane sounds and shots while Joe was unconscious. Around the corner, friends will face the first stealth segment of the game: an armed enemy is approaching, and they should hide.
You should press the button in time with hero’s breath to keep calm. This time, nothing bad will happen if you fail – the passing sergeant will point a weapon at the protagonist and run on, but such failures may have serious consequences in the future.
This chapter has no collectible items, so don’t search in the corners – just go forward. Open the jammed door together with Charlie (quickly hit the same button). After a few soldier corpses on your way, you’ll find yourself in the cargo compartment.
Move forward until a cutscene begins – a few dead soldiers lie near the exit in unnatural poses with an expression of horror on their faces. Having picked up the gun (Joe) and knife (Charlie), the characters will head to fight against the mysterious threat.
You will not even reach the next room when you lose your friend. However, you’ll find a demon child who apparently arranged the massacre. There’s no sense in resisting this creature from hell – in case of successful QTE, the character will suffer a heart attack. In case of failure, the hero will get a knife at his chest.
In absence of any resistance, the supernatural creature (with accomplices) will quickly deal with the remaining crew and subjugate the huge ship which will drift alone in Pacific Ocean waters over the next 72 years…
