League of Legends
A fantasy MOBA game combining over 150 heroes
League of Legends (LoL) is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) video game developed and published by Riot Games on October 27, 2009.
League of Legends is set in the fictional world of Runeterra and has its own rich lore with equal religions. In Runeterra, the champions of League of Legends are heroes and villains who have a variety of backstories, often related to the political struggles of the various countries of the main continent, Valoran. Additionally, some champions come from worlds other than Runeterra and visit it for their own purposes.
In the game, you are acting as an unseen «summoner» who controls a champion. Each champion has its own unique abilities and strategies which makes this game hard to master and exciting to play. The champions blend various elements, including high fantasy, steampunk and Lovecraftian horror. The number of champions grows almost every month and has already exceeded one hundred and fifty. As the game is constantly, old champions are sometimes reworked to fit the constantly changing narrative.
The usual goal is to destroy the opposing team's «nexus», a structure which lies at the heart of a base and is protected by defensive structures, although other distinct game modes exist as well. There are three lines: the top line, the middle line and the bottom line. The space between these lines is surrounded by jungle. Each line has its own minions pushing from the nexus towards enemy nexus and fighting each other. There are three towers and one inhibitor per lane, and two towers which are defending the nexus. If you destroy the inhibitor, you will summon the mega minions, so it is also one of the most important buildings.
The game's developer Riot Games was co-founded by Brandon «Ryze» Beck and Marc «Tryndamere» Merrill, who were roommates while they attended the University of South California. They partnered with Steve «Guinsoo» Feak, the previous designer of the popular Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne custom map Defense of the Ancients, and Steve «Pendragon» Mescon, the administrator of the former official support base for the map, to develop League of Legends.
League of Legends has an active and widespread competitive scene. In North America and Europe, Riot Games organizes the League Championship Series (LCS) which is located in Los Angeles and Berlin respectively. The LCS consists of 10 professional teams in each continent. Similar regional competitions exist in China (LPL), South Korea (LCK), Taiwan (LMS), Southeast Asia (GPL), and other regions. These regional competitions culminate with the annual World Championship. The 2017 World Championship had 60 million unique viewers and a total prize pool of over 4 million USD.
