Square Enix E3 2019 Press Conference Highlights

The long-awaited The Avengers game, numerous Final Fantasy titles and a new game from People Can Fly

Here’s what was shown

  • A lot of Final Fantasy: from remakes to remasters and card games
  • The Avengers game without MCU cast
  • Dark co-op shooter from People Can Fly.
  • New DLC for Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy XIV Online
  • J-Minecraft — Dragon Quest Builders 2
  • Dying Light 2 gameplay trailer

Following the conferences of Ubisoft and Next Horizon Gaming from AMD, Square Enix presented an impressive set of games and confirmed almost all the rumors that circulated before the presentation.

The Japanese publisher started by showing the live gameplay of Final Fantasy VII Remake as well as the extended trailer of the game. The developers stressed that the upcoming remake will be a great entry point for those players who are unfamiliar with the Final Fantasy universe.

The battles are now hybrid: real-time battles can be combined with turn-based combat, and the switch between the two modes will become available after the player has acquired a certain number of special tactical points. You may also switch between partners right in the middle of combat.

The first episode of Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released on March 3, 2020, exclusively on PS4.

After this, the developers showed a trailer of Life is Strange 2. If you are waiting for the release of all episodes and avoid spoilers, do not watch this trailer.

Square Enix also announced the release of a role-playing action Final Fantasy Chrystal Chronicles Remastered Edition. The original Crystal Chronicles was released in Japan back in 2003 as a spin-off of the original Final Fantasy series and was warmly received by the players. The remaster will become available this winter on PS4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.

The remaster of the Japanese JRPG The Last Remnant is already available on Nintendo Switch. The original game was released in 2008 on Xbox 360, while the worldwide release took place on Steam in April 2009.

Also, viewers saw a trailer of Dragon Quest Builders 2, a continuation of the game that was released back in 2016. The game which reminds Minecraft in style and mechanics will be released on July 14, 2019, on PS4.

After this, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age was announced – it will be released this autumn on Nintendo Switch. The game’s feature is the ability to switch between 3D graphics and 16-bit image. It will contain all the original content of the ‘’older’’ versions of Dragon Quest XI as well as additional character stories, fully instrumental soundtrack, English and Japanese voiceover.

The racing arcade game Circuit Superstars (formerly known as Apex Racing League) from the Vancouver studio Original Fire Games will be released in 2020 on PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch. Square Enix supported the game’s developers as part of its program to help indie studios.

Immediately after the announcement of Circuit Superstars, Square Enix showed a video which announced that the music from FF series is already available at all major streaming services.

The new Kingdom Hearts 3 DLC is called Re:Mind and will become available this winter on PS4 and Xbox One. No details on the storyline were provided.

Final Fantasy XIV Online will also get a new add-on. The paid DLC called Shadowbringers will become available on July 2, 2019.

Dying Light 2, which was shown on Microsoft conference the day before, was also discussed. Back then, a cinematic trailer was demonstrated, while now viewers were presented with gameplay footage. The release date is still vague – spring of 2020.

Then, a combined trailer of the western release of Romancing Saga 3 (released in Japan on NES in 1995) and SaGa: Scarlet Grace Ambitions (released in Asia in 2016) was shown. Romancing Saga 3 will be available on PS4, PSVita, Switch, PC, Xbox One, iOS, and Android. SaGa: Scarlet Grace Ambitions will appear on Switch, PS4, PC, iOS, and Android.

Mobile game War of the Visions was announced – it will become a sequel of the popular Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The project is still in the development stage and the release date is unknown.

Finally, we saw a new game from People Can Fly – the rumors about this game circulated before Square Enix presentation. The game is called Outriders and will be a ‘’dark’’ shooter with a cooperative mode. You will be able to create your own outrider and explore a dark world inhabited by unfriendly creatures. The game will be released next winter.

JRPG Oninaki, which was announced back in February 2019, received a release date – it will become available on August 22 on PS4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.

Before proceeding to the most awaited announcement, Square Enix told the public about the remaster (not to be confused with the remake) of Final Fantasy VIII. The original FFVIII was released back in 1999. The game will be visually refreshed and released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019 (the exact date has not yet been disclosed).

The dessert was presented at the end of the presentation – it’s a new game based on The Avengers called Marvel’s Avengers.

According to developers from Crystal Dynamics, this project is a completely new story which is not based on comic books or films so the actors in the trailer are not the ones that the public expected to see. The players will be able to create their own superhero squad (up to four players in the online cooperative mode) and choose their fate, as well as master the abilities of the characters and customize each of the constantly growing list of heroes. Each new hero and each new region will come for free: the game will have no donations and lootboxes.

The game will be released on PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, and PC on May 15, 2020. An early beta test will be conducted on PS4. The content on the console will be released a little earlier than on other platforms.
