E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations

It’s less than a month till E3 2019, so we are looking into what to expect from the conference: games, companies and consoles we are likely to see there, who will skip the Expo this year and why

We’update this material once new announcements are made.

E3 2019 is not as far as you think: June 11 is closing in fast, which means it’s time to start analyzing and fantasizing. And while it’s still too early to make bold predictions, some things to come can be easily guessed. We already know who will be participating and who’ll pass. Let’s remember what we know and what we think we know.

Electronic Entertainment Expo is a huge thing in the world of gamers. A huge celebration of our favorite form of art draws more and more crowds every year, and 2019 won’t be an exception. As usual, we expect unpredictable twists and surprises. Preferably, good ones. The E3 will kick off on June 7 with EA Play and will end on June 13. You can also check out the plan of the Expo through this link.

How to watch E3 2019

In 2019, some things have already changed. Sony, disappointingly, has announced that it will pass the event and instead will focus on Nintendo Direct-style State of Play presentations. That means no The Last of Us Part II, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima at the event. A bummer. But others have promised us lots of stuff, so let’s concentrate on that.

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-1

What games, studios and tech are sure to make an appearance

Games are what we want from such events. We want to be surprised – that’s what it’s all about. It’s not about the show or the presenters, it’s about pleasant revelations from the horse’s mouth. Quite frankly, we’re getting tired of constant leaks which spoil every big announcement. Let’s hope the developers will be able to show something unexpected – something not in this article.

So, let’s talk about the annual games we expect to see.

First, the most obvious ones. There’s no way in hell we won’t see other installments of the ever-popular sports series like FIFA, NHL, Madden, WWE, etc. Ubisoft is sure to show something about Just Dance. Now, these games rarely generate any interest from the gamers, but it’s impossible to imagine any E3 without some obnoxious host telling us why “this time Madden will actually be good”. It’s a tradition by this point.

Nothing unusual here, all of this is to be expected. Now, we know a lot of fresh new titles that are bound to make an appearance. Some have been popping up here or there, and some continue to remain a mystery. There’s a lot to talk about, so let’s try to mention all games that come to mind. Feel free to tell us what we missed in the comments!

Who doesn’t want to see the new masterpiece from the famous CD Projekt RED, who have blessed us with The Witcher 3 – one of the greatest games of this generation? We’d been patiently waiting for the gameplay reveal, which happened in 2018. But we still don’t know when the game will be released and how will it run on the current hardware. If I were to guess, I’d say we’ll see the (almost) final build on the Xbox conference, where the game will showcase the capabilities of the newest Xbox, codenamed Project Scarlett. The game will probably be cross-gen, as stated by CPDR CEO Adam Kiciński. Besides, as a leak says, we will see a new gameplay video with a targeted release date.

Update: The developers have announced that they will demonstrate a new demo. However, visitors won’t be able to play it.

It’s weird talking so much about Xbox exclusives, but what can you do since PlayStation decided to bail? And this time Microsoft actually has something to show to its fans. Like Halo Infinite, which will probably release sometime in 2020. This ‘’spiritual reboot’’, according to 343 Industries, will showcase the proprietary Slipspace Engine, designed specifically for the game. Also, no ‘’real-money loot boxes’’! As stated in a leak, we’ll hear new details about the game inclduing the confirmed 2020 Holidays release date and will see a new trailer.

Okay, Microsoft is not joshing around. Here’s another console exclusive for the ever-aching Xbox, and it’s another continuation of the legendary series. Local split-screen and cooperative play online have already been confirmed.

Oh my god, The Outer Worlds! The new title from beloved Obsidian Entertainment looks like a true successor to Fallout: New Vegas. It’s a first-person RPG with tons of depth. First trailers and a fantastic interview with the creators have successfully generated tons of hype. Since Microsoft owns the studio, the game will surely make an appearance during the Xbox conference. We are likely to see a new gameplay trailer and will learn the release date.

Xbox Project Scarlett

Release date: TBD

Chance to see at the E3: Most likely

Console unveilings are always exciting. A good presentation can guarantee good sells for the next few years. Drop the ball, and you’ll have a disaster on your hands. That’s why E3 2019 might be the most important in Microsoft’s history. It’s not certain, but quite probable. Along with the console, we might get info about Project xCloud streaming service.

Dying Light 2 New Trailer, Release Date

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-7

The sequel to the open world first-person survival game was announced a year before, and the hype is real. Techland has promised us to show its ‘’most ambitious project to date’’, and we can’t wait. Branching storylines and interesting plot twists are guaranteed: we already know that the masterminds behind the brilliant Bloody Baron questline in The Witcher 3 are working on the sequel.

Platform(s): PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Release date: August 27, 2019

Star Wars has been a divisive topic lately, mostly thanks to The Last Jedi and that Battlefront II debacle. Fans are no longer sure about the new films, but games? Games they want. In fact, we’ve been starved for a true single player Star Wars experience ever since The Force Unleashed was released. And now EA has one more chance to prove that it deserves the license, granted by Disney.

We are sure to see gameplay footage and learn more details about this ambitious title from Respawn.

[Updated — won’t come] Beyond Good & Evil 2

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-10

Release date: TBA

Chance to see at the E3: Most likely

Trailer

Update: As the developers announced in a blog post, the game won’t be shown at E3 2019. However, they will hold a new Space Monkey Report livestream on June 5 that you can watch on Twitch, YouTube and Facebook.

Yes, this again. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has proven to be an elusive title: Ubisoft has been working on it for some time, but the release date is still nowhere to be seen. We’d say it’s bound to be a next-gen title. Ubisoft loves teasing us with this game, so some kind of a new trailer is a guarantee.

Skull & Bones New Trailer, Release date

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-11

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Release date: 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

Trailer

Remember Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag? Remember the naval missions? Ubisoft remembers. In fact, it created a whole game out of that idea. Gone are the Assassins and the Templars, instead we have generic pirates sailing the Indian Ocean. Although, nothing against pirates – we’re long overdue for a good seafaring game. Build your fleet, endure harsh weather, fight others – the world is your oyster in Skull & Bones. Hopefully, this E3 will shed light on the game, which has been staying in the shadows ever since the last year’s event.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint New Trailer, Release Date

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

This time the players will get to explore the vast island in the Pacific Ocean. It’s a tactical shooter with character classes, survival elements, and dialogue choices. As the game is about to be released in 2019, we are sure to see some gameplay at the E3.

Borderlands 3 New Trailer

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-14

Platform(s): PC, PS4, and Xbox One

Release date: September 13, 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

Trailer

Unlike many other titles on our list, Borderlands 3 is no mystery. Once again we join the ranks of Vault Hunters, in their mission to stop Calypso Twins Troy and Tyreen (reportedly inspired by streamers and influencers, huh) from acquiring the ultimate power, whatever it is. As usual, prepare for fun gunplay and good humor. Too bad the Claptrap actor will not return.

Pokémon Sword and Shield New Trailer, Release Date

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-15

Platform(s): Nintendo Switch

Release date: Late 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Most likely

Trailer

No matter what you personally think about Pokémon, the new ‘’full-blown’’ game is a sure a big deal to a lot of folks. Nintendo has been teasing it for a while, and only recently showed the gameplay in all its HD glory. The game does not excite me personally mostly because it looks like more of the same without any innovation. One might say that the series has grown a bit stale. But hey, if it sells… Anyway, the new Britain-inspired episode set in the new region of Galar will be released in 2019. More details – in the annual E3 Direct.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night New Trailer

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-16

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch

Release date: June 18, 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Most likely

Trailer

We’ve been waiting for a spiritual successor to Castlevania for a long time. After the successful Kickstarter campaign, its creator Koji Igarashi has finally revealed his new project. Unfortunately, it’s been plagued with delays and cancellations. Now, finally, we know that it’ll launch on June 18.

Call of Duty New Game Announcement

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-17

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Release date: 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty will return in 2019. The still-untitled shooter will be unveiled during the Coliseum event. We’ll probably learn a lot more about it in May, as it usually happens.

The Sinking City New Trailer

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-18

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Release date: 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

Trailer

Probably one of the lesser known titles here, The Sinking City is a curious beast. Produced by Frogwares, the developers of somewhat famous Sherlock Holmes series, it tells a Lovecraftian tale filled to the brim with grotesque monsters, hard-to-crack mysteries, and Victorian architecture. There’s no handholding whatsoever – a rarity nowadays.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood Gameplay Trailer

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-19

Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Release date: 2020

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

If you think there aren’t enough games that allow you to play as a werewolf, you’re not alone: Cyanide Studios, which has recently released Call of Cthulhu: The Official Video Game, is ready to finally show its long-awaited new title. The project is an adaption of a tabletop role-playing game Werewolf: The Apocalypse. Our protagonist is an eco-terrorist lycanthrope with abilities to shapeshift. That’s… original to say the least. Publisher BIgben cofirmed that we’ll get to see some werewolves in June.

TimeSplitters/something else from THQ Nordic

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-20

Platform(s): TBA

Release date: TBA

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

We don’t know what, but we know when THQ Nordic will unveil their two new games. And not just any games, but ‘’beloved games/franchises’’. What can it be? Most people guess TimeSplitters, but that’s not for certain. Some say Destroy All Humans!, some – Alone in the Dark. All we know is that one game is a remake, and the second one is some kind of a reimagining.

Netflix New Games Announcement

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-21

Platform(s): TBA

Release date: TBA

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

An unexpected guest at the gaming show, Netflix is all about interactivity these days. The streaming giant not only plans to make their shows less linear (remember Bandersnatch) but also wants to have more of their exclusives gamified. After all, they even added Minecraft: Story Mode to their catalogue. Want to know more? Don’t miss their ‘’Bringing Your Favorite Shows to Life: Developing Netflix Originals into Video Games’’ panel (what a snazzy title).

The company also wants to show off their Stranger Things game – and more. Who knows, maybe it’s the Nintendo Switch app we’ve been waiting for over two years.

Stronghold Next New Trailer

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-22

Platform(s): PC

Release date: TBD

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

Trailer

FireFly studio, famous for its Stronghold series, has confirmed that their new project, somewhat lazily branded Stronghold Next, will debut on this year’s E3. Finally: the game was announced in 2015. By the way, the ‘’Next’’ in the title is not coincidental: the game will have a new setting, so don’t go in expecting Stronghold 4.

New Animal Crossing Game Trailer and Release Date

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-23

Platform(s): Switch

Release date: 2019

Chance to see at the E3: Probably

‘’Probably’’ for a game that’s supposed to release this year? Yeah, sounds weird, but Nintendo has been so secretive about it that I just find it hard to believe we’ll see anything at the E3 – or play the game in 2019 for that matter. I’d say expect delays. But hey, I’ll be happy if Nintendo proves me wrong.

The Avengers Project Reveal

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-24

Platform(s): TBD

Release date: TBD

Chance to see at the E3: Certainly

Trailer

It’s been two years since we first found out about The Avengers Project from developers Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. Since then, comics fans have been desperate for new info, but it was not to be. This year, after the bombastic Endgame movie, it would be only natural to unveil the long-awaited third-person action adventure.

Update: As stated in the game’s Twitter account, it will be shown at E3 2019.

Dragon Age 4 New Trailer, Game Details

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-25

Platform(s): TBD

Release date: TBD

Chance to see at the E3: Unlikely

Trailer

EA and especially BioWare are having a bad time. The recent Anthem turned out to be a massive failure, and we’re finally starting to accept the painful fact that the beloved studio of yore is no more. But some of us still believe that the company can turn things around. We know that Dragon Age 4 is coming, and the E3 is the perfect place to show it. Anything to erase the agonizing memories of Mass Effect Andromeda.

Watch Dogs 3 Announcement

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-26

Platform(s): TBD

Release date: TBD

Chance to see at the E3: Unlikely

I have a confession to make: I adore Watch Dogs series. Sure, the first one was a PR nightmare, but it was actually a solid game with a strong pro-privacy message. The sequel has lost the serious tone and noir aesthetics and breathed new life into the franchise. Most important, it was fun. And, if rumors are to be believed, at E3 2019 we are bound to see Watch Dogs 3. I for one am excited: leaks indicated that the game will take place in London.

Games and companies we WON’T see at E3

Unfortunately, many popular games and companies won’t make an appearance. Let’s talk about them.

Sony PlayStation

‘’So the trade show became a trade show without a lot of trade activity. The world has changed, but E3 hasn’t necessarily changed with it,’’ said Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios head, Shawn Layden, explaining Sony’s decision to skip this year’s E3.

This one’s a biggie. Sony, usually one of the most active participators, decided to pass this year – for the first time in the company’s history. A truly shocking decision, considering the fact that PS5 is on the horizon. But PlayStation seems to be imitating Nintendo and their video format. Right now their ‘’State of Play’’ is the best way to get official information firsthand.

Sony’s absence is the biggest disappointment of this year’s E3, and many people have understandably lost all interest in the event whatsoever. After all, we won’t see The Last of Us Part II, Ghost of Tsushima, Dreams, Death Stranding – in a lot of ways the most interesting games that come to mind. A real shame.

Another reason this decision is disappointing is that it means no PS5 unveiling.

‘’Sony only focused on a handful of games last year and got some blowback for that, so I suspect they looked at what they were going to be able to show off this year and didn’t think they had an excellent story to tell," Ward said. "I think they'll be back in force at E3 2020, though.’’ thinks Lewis Ward, research director for gaming and AR/VR.

Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-27

We’ve been very patient with Bethesda lately, but it’s high time the company repays us with something truly great. Fallout 76 turned out to be lame, and mobile projects like Elder Scrolls Blades or The Elder Scrolls: Legends quite frankly don’t excite us one bit. Sure, we’ll see games from other studios like Doom Eternal, but what about Elder Scrolls VI? What about Starfield?

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait some more. ‘’It's going to be a long time. It's not something we're going to be talking about at E3, either of those games this year,” said Todd Howard. To say it a disappointment would be an understatement. This E3 looks failed already for Bethesda.

Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft never stops making them, and we never stop buying them. Assassin's Creed Origins and Assassin's Creed Odyssey have been a success, and now we wonder where – and when – will we find ourselves next. Very unreliable rumors have been mentioning the new title – Ragnarok, which means we’ll be teleported to Norway in the times of Vikings. That means lots of sailing and pillaging and not a lot of climbing. The game is also supposed to be cross-gen. However, it all turned out to be fake, but one thing is almost certain: no AC will release in 2019.

‘’On Assassin's, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin's next year,’’ said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. ‘’It's just because the team was working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you're not going to have a fully-fledged one.’’

EA

While EA is going nowhere, this year we won’t get to witness their usual conference. No show, no oblivious athletes and streamers stumbling on the stage. And it’s your fault: EA representatives say that it’s a direct reaction to lukewarm reviews from the last year.

But rejoice: unlike Sony, the company will bring tons of games. Buy a ticket and you’ll be able to try them at EA Play at the Hollywood Palladium.

‘’We're skipping the press conference this year and are replacing it with multiple live streams that will air during the first two days of the event, bringing you more of what you've told us you want — more gameplay and insights from the teams making the games,’’ said the publisher. Well, they aren’t wrong…

New Switch model

E3 2019 Preview: Confirmed Announcements and Expectations-28

Ever since the Switch came out, we’ve been hearing news about the new revision of the console. The ‘’Pro’’ model with a bigger and better screen and the ‘’Mini’’ version with undetachable Joy-Cons all sound realistic, but in April Nintendo confirmed that there are no plans to reveal the new iterations of the popular console. Could they be lying? It’s possible. But better moderate your expectations.
